🧠 New Hope: Breakthrough Brain Cancer Drug Approved by Health Canada and Covered by Ontario

Photo by Antonio Costa / Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, from the Whig-Standard story.
Health Canada has officially approved a new drug called vorasidenib (aka Voranigo), and in even better news, the Ontario government is now covering the cost for patients. Dr. James Perry, the physician who famously cared for our hometown hero Gord Downie during his final tour, says this move provides a new level of optimism for patients. While the battle against brain cancer is still a tough one, this milestone means families across the province now have access to a treatment that was out of reach just a short time ago. It is a heartening reminder that the fight Gord continued is resulting in real progress for patients today.

🖥️ Queen's and SFU Want to Build Canada a Supercomputer (and Put It Right Here in Kingston)

Queen's University has teamed up with Simon Fraser University to pitch the federal government on building a massive national supercomputer, and they want Kingston to be home base. The bid is part of a $900-million federal program designed to keep Canadian data and research on Canadian soil. If anyone can pull it off, it's Queen's: their researchers have helped build some of the top-10 most powerful supercomputers on the planet. Not a bad thing to put on your résumé.

After losing primary care access back in August 2023, the roughly 1,600 residents of Wolfe Island can once again see a medical professional without hopping on a ferry. Aridia Medical is now running a walk-in clinic two days a week at the Wolfe Island Medical Clinic as part of a 12-month pilot project covering both Wolfe and Simcoe islands. Even better, the Queen's University School of Nursing is sending aspiring nurse practitioners to the island for hands-on clinical experience. The whole thing is funded through community fundraising and grants from the Township of Frontenac Islands and the County of Frontenac, so there's no cost to residents or property owners.

🏠 Napanee Just Got Its Own Habitat for Humanity ReStore (and the Lineup Said It All)

When Habitat for Humanity Kingston Limestone Region opened its newest ReStore at 450 Centre St. in Napanee on Saturday, the crowd was already lined up outside waiting. The nearly 8,000-square-foot shop sells new and gently used items, with everything from building supplies to clothing and furniture. A lot of the inventory comes from big-box partners like Rona and Home Depot donating returns, floor models, and scratch-and-dent items that would otherwise end up in a landfill. Every dollar spent at the Napanee location stays in the community, and Habitat is already working with the municipality on plans to build a triplex on Church Street for local families.
