🧠 KHSC Among the First in Canada to Offer New Alzheimer’s Treatments
People across southeastern Ontario no longer have to travel to Toronto or Ottawa for the newest Alzheimer’s care. Kingston Health Sciences Centre is among the first hospitals in Canada to offer new treatments, recently approved by Health Canada, that target the disease itself, and they work best when started early. KHSC has also developed a new blood test for early diagnosis, funded by University Hospitals Kingston Foundation and YGK Healthcare Champions. Memory specialist Dr. Durjoy Lahiri said in a release from KHSC that 25 to 30 patients could be getting infusions within six to nine months, and he wants Kingston to be the region’s referral centre. One of the very first patients is Bram Fisher, who plays in the band Old Gravel Road.

🎓 Queen’s Gets $104 Million for 3,604 Student Seats
Ontario is giving Queen’s University $104 million to fund 3,604 student seats: 2,496 in science, technology, engineering and math, 836 in education and 272 in health. Not all of them are new, though. 2,116 are seats Queen’s already had but was not getting funding for, and 1,488 are brand new, added over the next few years through the end of 2027-28. Nolan Quinn, Ontario’s Minister of Colleges, Universities, Research Excellence and Security, made the announcement at Ellis Hall, where he also got a look at the Rolling Load Simulator in the civil engineering lab.

🚧 Front Road and King Street West Back to Four Lanes by November
Good news for west-end drivers. After about two years squeezed down to two lanes, Front Road and King Street West between the Invista plant and Country Club Drive, near St. Lawrence College, should open back up to all four lanes in November. New asphalt is already down on the westbound side, and the eastbound lanes get repaved next. It’s all part of Utilities Kingston’s Portsmouth Pumping Station Redirect and Trunk Watermain project, which sends more sewage west to the Cataraqui Bay treatment plant so there’s more room at Ravensview. Don’t put the detour maps away for good, though: next spring the work moves on to King Street West and Union Street.

🏙️ Have Your Say on Downtown Kingston: Survey Closes November 1
What do you love about downtown Kingston, and what would you fix? The City of Kingston wants to hear it. Its Downtown Kingston Integrated Plan is meant to get all the groups, plans and projects working on downtown pulling in the same direction, so improvements are coordinated and easier to keep track of. The survey asks what works, what you value, what needs attention and which ideas are worth a look. It won’t decide final projects or funding; it feeds the draft plan, expected late this fall. Fill it out by Sunday, November 1 at 11:55 p.m., or call 613-546-0000 for a paper or phone version.

🎗️ Frontenacs’ Landon Wright Launches Wright’s Fight for Cancer Patients
Kingston Frontenacs forward Landon Wright has started Wright’s Fight in honour of his mom, Sandy, who was diagnosed with cancer in mid-August. She can’t drive, so she’s staying in Ottawa with her daughters during treatment and relies on the Canadian Cancer Society’s rides to get to appointments, which also means she can’t come to Fronts games anymore. Wright wants to help people with everything that comes on top of treatment: getting there, a place to stay, and research. “You don’t fully realize how much it affects a person until it hits close to home,” Wright said in a Frontenacs release. Ways to help are coming in the next few weeks.
