❄️ Snow Angels: Sign Up to Shovel for a Neighbour, or Ask for a Hand This Winter
The first flakes are on their way, and so is the shovelling. Snow Angels matches people who need a hand clearing snow with neighbours who are happy to grab a shovel. The City of Kingston points residents to Snow Angels Canada, the only place to sign up, whether you want to volunteer or register for help for yourself or someone you care about. It all started with an idea Lincoln McCardle had in 2015, and the best time to join is right now, before the first big dump of snow.

🌺 100,000 Poppies and Counting: Kingston Legion Branch 560 Marks the Poppy’s 100th Year
Kingston has been busy pinning poppies. In the poppy’s 100th year in Canada, Royal Canadian Legion Branch 560, the Limestone City Branch on Montreal Street, has sent out more than 100,000 of them, with requests still coming in and another 10,000 on order, the Whig-Standard reports. Plus, 1,600 pin-free poppy stickers went to schools and seniors’ homes like Providence Care. Almost 100 volunteers keep it all moving, including students from Holy Cross Catholic Secondary School, who delivered boxes for the fifth year, organized by Kerri Tadeau. The campaign raises about $60,000 a year for veterans.

💉 Respiratory Virus Season Is Here: Free Flu and COVID Shots, and Who Can Get RSV Protection
Sniffle season is officially here. Southeast Public Health says respiratory virus season has arrived and is asking everyone to take precautions against flu, COVID-19 and RSV. Flu and COVID-19 shots are free for anyone six months and older who lives, works or goes to school in Ontario, and you can get both at the same visit. RSV protection is available for babies born on or after April 1, 2026 and under eight months, vulnerable kids under two (after talking with a pediatrician), adults 75 and older, and high-risk adults 60 to 74. Most people get their shots at a pharmacy or from their health-care provider, and Southeast Public Health runs clinics for people who don’t have one.

🍲 Rapid Relief Team Volunteers Brought 100 Meals to Firefighters at the John Counter Boulevard Scrap Yard Fire
When about 75 firefighters spent October 22 battling a big fire at a scrap and steel yard on John Counter Boulevard, some local volunteers made sure nobody went hungry. Rapid Relief Team, the charitable arm of the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church, called Kingston Fire & Rescue’s Deputy Chief to offer help, then lined up 100 meals from Firehouse Subs for the crews. Four Kingston-based volunteers handled it all. “When we heard about the fire, we wanted to find a way to help the firefighters on the ground,” Travis McCamley, the team’s leader in Kingston, said in a media release. The City reported no injuries.

🎖️ Collins Bay Man Restores the Memorial Bench for Capt. Matthew Dawe Ahead of Remembrance Day
A tired old bench just got a second life, and so did a tribute. Volunteer Grant Barber noticed the memorial bench honouring Capt. Matthew Dawe at the Collins Bay cenotaph, at Hillview Road and Mona Drive, was looking worn, so he rebuilt it himself in cedar with the blessing of the Capt. Matthew Dawe Memorial Branch 631 of the Royal Canadian Legion, the Whig-Standard reports. Rona+ on Princess Street chipped in $150 toward the wood. Capt. Dawe, a Kingston soldier, was killed in Afghanistan in 2007, and the fresh bench is ready in time for Remembrance Day.

📖 Sixty-Five Signallers Added to the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals Book of Remembrance
Sixty-five names that were missing are finally where they belong. The Royal Canadian Corps of Signals Book of Remembrance, kept at the Military Communications and Electronics Museum, now honours 65 more signallers who died in service, Kingstonist reports. New research, mostly by retired Brigadier-General Kevin O’Keefe, turned up the missing names, and calligrapher and retired Chief Warrant Officer Richard Draffin added them by hand. The book was rededicated at a ceremony on Friday, October 23, and it is now considered complete.

🏠 A Donor Offers Feed the People a Heated, Lockable Building for Belle Park
Feed the People never takes a day off from serving free lunch at Belle Park, and now a generous donor wants to give them a proper roof. After strong winds knocked over the group’s tent in the park’s parking lot on October 6, right in the middle of a hot chocolate service (no one was hurt), the donor offered Feed the People a heated, lockable “relocatable building” at no cost to the City, the Whig-Standard reports. It would work much like the tent, but with heat and power, and food and supplies could be stored on site instead of at volunteers’ homes. Councillors Jeff McLaren and Lisa Osanic brought a motion to council on November 3 asking the City to work with the group on the permits and site approval it needs, with a staff person to help speed things along. Update: At its November 3 meeting, council voted 12-1 to have staff work with Feed the People on the donated building and report back on approvals and costs by the end of 2026, Kingstonist reports, though staff say a larger building is very unlikely to be in place by year’s end.
